Flushing a Power Steering Pump of Old Fluid (prior to installing new gearbox)

Level I Flush

  1. Disable vehicles ignition system per your vehicle’s service manual.

  2. Assuming both hose are still connected to the pump, put the other hose ends in a drain/catch pan.

  3. Pour new fluid into the reservoir until it runs clear out of the return hose.

  4. If original fluid is in very poor condition, proceed to Level II

Level II Flush

  1. After Level I Flush, plug the return hose

  2. Fill Reservoir with new fluid

  3. Prepare to catch the fluid pumped out of the high pressure hose

  4. Crank the engine for 5 seconds (it won’t start because you have the ignition system disabled, per step 1)

  5. Refill reservoir and repeat

  6. Unplug the drain hose and allow fluid to drain

  7. Pump is now flushed
